Madra Rua
Nitro Red Ale
Red Ale is a style of beer that is usually smooth, sometimes sweet, and always red. 'Nitro' is where things become particularly interesting.
Nitro beers, which are brewed and then served with a mix of nitrogen and CO2, have finer bubbles, a denser head, and a creamier mouthfeel.
With our Madra Rua Nitro Red Ale, there were several objectives we aimed to achieve in its development to make it stand out from other Red Ales.
As for the name 'Madra Rua,' it is a Gaelic expression meaning 'Fox' (a direct translation actually yields 'Red Dog').
Ronan chose this name for the Nitro Red Ale for two reasons.
First, foxes are his favorite animal. Growing up in Dublin, he played for the Pembroke Cricket Club, whose emblem was, of course, a fox. The second reason is more apparent—the red connection between foxes and the Ale!
We have always featured beers from Brauhaus Gusswerk at our pub, including the Nicobar IPA, AAA, Steinbier, and Horny Betty.
During our conversations with Reini, the owner, about all thing's beer, various ideas have emerged.
Over the years, Reini has also crafted a cider and a stout specifically for our pub. However, with the Nitro Red Ale, we have truly struck gold. It has been a tremendous success for us and represents a fantastic collaboration between Charlie P's and Brauhaus Gusswerk.. Long may it continue!
"I founded the Gusswerk brewery with the aim of realizing my dream and establishing "the Austrian organic brewery". "Flavour is everything - brewed on foundation" is our motto.
Pembroke Cricket Club in Dublin
The name Madra Rua resonates with Ronan on a couple of levels, firstly from his cricket playing days at Pembroke Cricket Club in Dublin, whose emblem was of course... a Fox :)

ABOUT THE BREWER
Brauhaus Gusswerk founder & Brewmaster Reinhold Barta takes great pride in his work — you can taste it in every glass.
Reini is a pioneer in the Austrian brewery scene. He was always fascinated by beer making, and when he went to work at a Brewery in Cork city in Ireland for a year, he found a new love: Irish Red Ale.
On his return home to Austria, he introduced this beer style to the Austrian brewery scene where it quickly became very popular. At the time, the craft beer movement had not even begun.
Then came the opportunity to make the perfect Nitro Red Ale for Charlie P's! This fine, creamy smooth RED ALE using no less than 7 different Hop varieties, brewed exclusively for Charlie P's by Reini is a true Nitro Red Ale masterpiece.
"It is because of these "Irish roots" that Madra Rua RED ALE is so authentic and extremely pleasant to drink. Something for everyone!" - Reini Barta
